Applemoon Interiors was started in 2007 by me - Kim Hayman. I'm a mum of three boys, Elliott , Louie and Finley, and happily married to Mark since 1995. My mum taught me to sew as a child. She was always making clothes, curtains, quilts, and even a beautiful wedding dress! Her confidence in trying new projects was inspiring and contagious. In 2002, when I was working in a Laura Ashley home store, developing my love for all things 'interiors' my parents decided to move to Canada. When they left, I realised that I needed to hone my own skills, to get to grips with the intricacies of curtain-making. I signed up for a course and enjoyed every moment.
Having passed the course with really lovely feedback, and being commissioned by a friend to make her curtains, it dawned on me that I'd really found my niche. Inundated with recommendations and referrals, I registered as a business, and soon Applemoon Interiors was launched. I haven't looked back since!
Where we are today:
I have gone from sewing curtains on my living room floor, to working in a purpose-built cabin in our garden. As demand grew, I decided to rent a gorgeous flint barn just outside Arundel, which I occupied for a year before realising that I need to be more visible. Having located to new premises, in 2014 I opened my Applemoon Interiors shop in Westergate, just a ten minute drive from Chichester.
The shop houses more than 500 fabric books, which clients can browse through, along with curtain pole samples, trimmings, paint charts and wallpapers, plus a selection of interiors products. We have sample curtains on display so clients can come in and see the quality of our work.
Over the years, the business has expanded, and I now offer a comprehensive interior design and space planning service. This has proved extremely popular with clients who can, sometimes, feel rather overwhelmed by the choices that are available. At Applemoon, we can take the stress and legwork out of putting together a design scheme for clients' homes by showing them what's available and offering advice to create the look they're striving for. The feedback I have received from clients has been fantastic.
Here is the lovely Abby in her happy place - making a roman blind!
I now have a wonderful team to help me. Abby Birch is our soft furnishings manager, and she oversees the day-to-day running of the shop and makes all of the blinds right here at Applemoon HQ. Lucy is our office manager and is also involved in some design work. Dawn Outen and Kim Francis, have their own workrooms, where they make all of the curtains. Together, we provide beautiful hand-finished soft furnishings, made to your exact specifications. Jon and Mike, who have more than 65 years of experience between them, undertake all of the fitting and installation of your curtains and blinds.
In 2015, Applemoon Interiors won the Chichester Business Awards Small Business of the Year!
